Have you seen the Southern Cross, Crux, in the sky? I am wondering whether the star above the Aurora Australis in your picture might be part of the Southern Cross.

I'm not sure which star is visible in that photo, but yup the southern cross is easily visible here. there's also a 'false cross' constellation which is a larger but dimmer version of the southern cross.
